Good news for fans of real literature and intelligent writing is the emergence of new Scottish publisher Vagabond Voices. Based in Lewis, Vagabond Voices promises to offer a genuine alternative to the increasingly celebrity and TV-tie-in driven output of the big publishing machines in London. They represent an unashamedly literary approach with pan-European scope and an enthusiasm for intellectualism that elsewhere is usually shunted into a dark, embarrassed corner, if allowed to exist at all. As part of their opening salvo they are publishing a new novel by my dad, Allan Massie, called Surviving, a complex tale of corruption, murder, broken souls and the value of literature itself, set in Rome. It can be bought in good bookshops or Amazon after June 8th but it is best to buy direct from the publishers, where it is already available, to support them fully. There will also be an event at The Borders Book Festival in June.
Vagabond Voices is a new and ambitious outfit with much to offer anyone with an interest in real writing, so do support them all you can, it will be worth it.
